Industrial Sonica
The River Derwent and its ecology is deeply tied to its changing landscape and its history, and subsequently to its industry. The river once played a vital role in the success of the industrial revolution in the Midlands, however the rise in pollution due to the industrialisation of Derbyshire drove out much of its native wildlife including the Freshwater Lamprey and the Atlantic Salmon. Over the past decade new measures and initiatives have been taken to reintroduce these beautiful creatures back into the Derbyshire landscape with encouraging levels of success. New environmental agencies have been set up to work with and develop hydro-electric power along the River Derwent taking into consideration its environmental impact and its economical longevity.

A branch of this project is dedicated to observing and understanding these new environmental measures and into investigating their sonic impact on the ecology of the river.
Example of ultrasonic sound pollution caused
by electrical lighting along the River Derwent.
Example of noise pollution caused by machinery.
